Wanted: The Perfect Pet

Henry is convinced he knows exactly what kind of pet would suit him perfectly. He wants a dog with a soft, moist nose; one who is loyal, tame, and brave. But to his surprise, Henry befriends not a dog, but a duck. Is what Henry wants necessarily what he needs? This is an amusing tale about a special and surprising friendship.

"Acquire a friend for yourself" (Ethics of the Fathers 1:6)

Friendships are not easily forged. In order to make friends, one must take action – show interest in others, and give them attention. That is what is referred to in the Mishnah in Ethics of the Fathers.

In his attempt to acquire a friend, the duck was willing to go the extra mile and dress as a dog, while Henry was willing to be more flexible with his demands. He welcomed the surprising guest that came to his door, played with him, and took care of him. As they spent time together, Henry came to realize that the duck had become the perfect pet for him, even more perfect than a dog, and they had both acquired a friend for themselves.

Have you noticed the special combination of words and illustrations in this book? Was it easily read aloud? What about the illustrations and plot did you find amusing?
You may enjoy searching together for the page on which Henry puts up the wanted poster for the perfect pet. What other ads can you see up there? Do these products really exist? Perhaps you would like make an ad of your own with your child, seeking something they greatly desire, even if it only imaginary.
A dog cannot quack, and a duck cannot play catch. But if you look upon things with kindness, you can always find the good in them. You may want to make note of the unique talent each of your family members and friends possess.
Henry knows a lot about the characteristics of frogs, dogs – and ducks! What animals does your child know? You may want to visit a farm, zoo or pet store, and get to know new animals.
You could share a childhood experience with your child: which animals lived nearby? Did you own a pet when you were a child? If so, you could tell them about it, and show them pictures from your past.
Perhaps you would enjoy having a costume night at home. Each of you can dress up as a different animal, and the others could guess which animal they are. You could even invent imaginary animals, mixing a horse's tail with cat's ears and so on. What would you name the animals you have invented, and what would their characteristics be?

Совсем непросто найти настоящего друга. Чтобы подружиться, нужно действовать – интересоваться человеком, находящимся рядом, уделять ему внимание. Вот о чем говорится в трактате.

Утенок был готов буквально на все, чтобы найти себе друга, даже притвориться щенком, ну а Генри смягчил свои требования. Он принял у себя гостя, неожиданно постучавшегося в дверь, играл с ним и ухаживал за ним. Проведенное вместе время дало возможность Генри понять, что утенок стал для него идеальным питомцем, и что он даже лучше собаки. Таким образом каждый обрел нового друга.

Читаем и играем дома

Обратили ли вы внимание на интересную комбинацию слов и иллюстраций в книге? Легко ли было читать книгу вслух? Что рассмешило вас в иллюстрациях и в тексте?
Поищите вместе страницу, на которой Генри вешает объявление об идеальном друге. Какие еще объявления вывешены на доске? Существуют ли на самом деле предметы, о которых в них говорится? Составьте вместе с детьми объявление о желанной вещи, даже если она воображаемая.
Щенки не умеют крякать, а утята – ловить мячи. Но присмотревшись внимательно, можно увидеть преимущества каждого. Отметьте отличительные стороны каждого из членов семьи и интересные черты друзей.
Генри много знает о лягушках, о собаках и об утках! Какими животными интересуются ваши дети? Можно сходить вместе в живой уголок, зоопарк или зоомагазин и познакомиться с новыми животными.
Поделитесь с малышами детскими воспоминаниями: какие животные обитали рядом с вами, был ли у вас в детстве домашний питомец? Если был, расскажите о нем, покажите старые фотографии.
