It is only when he meets Pumpkin the Kitten that he realizes a close encounter and corrective experience can make one change their mind, and make a new friend.

Experience is the best teacher

We often form opinions based on a generalization, rumor, or single encounter. But are we always right to do so? Sometimes, one unfortunate incident makes us reject new experiences, new friends, or new opportunities to broaden our horizons. It takes courage to change one’s mind, be open and positive.

Pumpkin the Kitten managed to change an entire family’s mind, and meeting him reminds us of all we stand to gain by giving second chances. Has your child ever changed his or her mind about something? If so, kudos to them!

You may like to sit together, read the story out loud, and look at all the illustrations. Perhaps you could stop reading when Dad comes home with the box, and see if your child can guess what is moving around inside it.
The illustrator has hidden many animals in the illustrations. Some of them are real, others are toys. You may enjoy looking through the book, and searching for the animals on each page. Have you found the green creature with the antennae? What is it doing on Dad’s hand? And what happens to it when the little boy meets Pumpkin the Kitten?
Using an old sock, some leftover fabric and buttons, you could make a hand puppet in the shape of a cat together, and act the story out. How would you name your puppet? Is it fun to pet? What kind of sound does it make?
Perhaps you would enjoy going for a walk in your neighborhood in search of cats. It is best not to go too near them, or try to pet them, if they are not domesticated, but you could help them a little. An empty box and some old fabrics could serve as a shelter for street cats, so they can stay warm and dry on cold nights and rainy days.
Which animals do you like? Is there an animal that your child does not like, or that scares them? You may want to visit the zoo, or a local pet store, and see this animal from up close. You too might find that a close encounter with the animal will make you change your mind about it.

Нередко мы спешим составить мнение о ком-то на основе обобщений, слухов или личного, но одноразового опыта. Всегда ли наше мнение верно? Порой после единичной неудавшейся встречи мы поспешно отказываемся от продолжения знакомства, отказываемся от новых друзей, от расширения круга общения. Изменить свое мнение непросто, для этого необходима смелость, открытость и вера в добро.

Котенку Тыкве удалось изменить мнение о себе членов одной семьи. Встреча с ним напоминает нам о том, как много можно выиграть, дав кому-то второй шанс. Помните ли вы случай, когда ваши дети меняли мнение о ком-либо? За такую попытку они заслуживают всяческой похвалы!

Читаем и играем дома

Садитесь рядышком поудобнее, прочтите книгу вслух, рассмотрите иллюстрации. Задержитесь на странице, на которой папа появляется дома с коробкой. Угадали ли дети, что шевелится внутри нее?
Иллюстратор «спрятал» на страницах разных животных, некоторые из них настоящие, другие – игрушечные. Полистайте вместе страницы, поищите на них зверюшек. Вы нашли зеленое существо с усиками? Что оно делает на руке у папы, и что с ним случилось, когда ребенок познакомился с котенком Тыквой?
Из старого носка, лоскутков ткани и пуговиц можно смастерить кота и устроить домашний кукольный спектакль. Как вы назовете вашего котенка? Приятно ли его гладить? Какие звуки он издает?
Отправляйтесь на прогулку вокруг дома, поищите по пути котов. Не приближайтесь к уличным кошкам, не стоит их гладить, но им можно и нужно помочь. Принесите пустой ящик, положите в него старые теплые одеяла – такой ящик будет служить отличным убежищем уличным котам в дождливые дни и холодные зимние ночи.
Каких животных любите вы? Есть ли животные, которых ваши дети недолюбливают или такие, которых они боятся? Сходите с детьми в зоопарк или зоомагазин, познакомьтесь с нелюбимым животным поближе. Возможно, и вы увидите, что близкое знакомство с животным может изменить ваше мнение о нем.
