The hedgehog digs a burrow, and while doing so, hurls dirt onto the main road. How will the other animals walk along the road? Who will dispose of the piled-up dirt? This story is about caring and reciprocity, and is based on a Talmudic midrash about individuals’ responsibility for public property.

Suggestions for Family Activities
Who cares? The hedgehog learns to be considerate, and as he does, he makes friends, feels a sense of belonging to his environment, and realizes he really should care, he should care very much. This book was inspired by the midrash about a man who was throwing stones from his private property to the public domain, refusing to be considerate of others, until he himself stumbled upon the very stones he threw, and realized that:

A person should not throw stones from his property into the public domain
(Talmud Bavli, Bava Kamma 50b)

A discussion on being considerate How about discussing what being considerate is: What does it mean to be “considerate”? who was considerate of whom in this story? Perhaps you would enjoy sharing incidents that have happened to you – What happened and how did it make you feel? And how can you be considerate of one another as a family?
